Snorkeling

10 Must-Try Water Activities for Your Next Australian Vacation

Australia really has everything – great weather, beautiful beaches, and clear waters, so if you are going there on vacation, you can find all types of water activities in the Aussie waters. I’ve tried a couple of these myself, but to say the least, there are dozens of more water activities one could never miss there. Here are some activities I think should definitely be on your list.

Surfing Those Iconic Aussie Waves

Surfing is just such an iconic Australian thing to do and there are some stunning locations like Byron Bay or the Gold Coast. Here the beaches are ideal for first-timers even if you have never done surfing in your life, and you can find schools teaching surfing everywhere. I tried surfing once and I spent half my time on the water falling off the board anyway, it was such a great achievement just to stand up and ride the wave (no matter how briefly). But, I guess it’s all part of the experience, right?

Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef

If there’s one place you’ve got to snorkel, it’s the Great Barrier Reef. This natural wonder is like an underwater paradise, with colorful corals, fish, and an occasional sea turtle drifting by. Snorkeling here is magical—you float above these vibrant reefs that look like another world altogether. Even if you’re not a pro swimmer, the shallow areas still let you see all the beauty, and honestly, just watching the reef life go about its business is so calming.

Paddleboarding in Byron Bay

Paddleboarding has become one of my favorite ways to explore calm waters, and Byron Bay is ideal for it. You stand up on a board and paddle out, taking in the coastal views from a unique angle. Plus, it’s a surprisingly good workout for your core. Byron’s waters are so calm and clear, it feels like gliding over glass. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or two swimming nearby!

Kayaking with Dolphins in Jervis Bay

If you can picture yourself getting out on the water early in the morning, and then look to your left or right and see dolphins, then you get the idea of why kayaking in Jervis Bay is special. Friends, the water of this place is very transparent and people are friendly here with dolphins also. I have never done it, but some of the friends who have done it explain that it is something that you’ll never want to FORGET. You can do it on your own, but if you are a little scared, there are guided tours and the instructors will help you.

White Water Rafting on the Tully River

Looking for a serious thrill? Tully River white water rafting is expected to be more challenging. The water in the river is rough and there are many fast currents that give out bounces. I’ve heard that it would take your breath away literally if you’re into extreme adventures. It’s great fun, but be ready to get wet and take some humor with you – they say half the fun is fluttering from side to side frantically trying not to fall out of the raft.

Cruising Hidden Coves with a Boat Hire in Narooma

If your interest is touring at a personal and relaxed pace, then a fishing boat hire in Narroma is your ideal option. Renting a boat allows you to discover some bays, sandy shores and areas to relax. I did this with a couple of friends and it was such a great way to spend the day without pressure. If it is fishing, swimming, sun-bathing, or simply lazing around, a boat day in Narooma is a wonderful way to enjoy the Coast.

Jet Skiing on the Gold Coast

If you are looking for some speed, then you should not miss jet skiing along the Gold Coast. Imagine zipping through the water, wind blowing through your hair, waves slapping against the sides as you glide – could there be anything better? There are places that offer professional tour guides especially if it’s your first time to explore Gold Coast, you can do it in full speed mode.

Scuba Diving with Sharks at Port Lincoln

Alright, this one’s for the brave souls—scuba diving with sharks in Port Lincoln. You are in a cage and secure, but you are still several feet from great whites in their habitat! Even saying it out loud can get your spine tingling, but a few of our friends who have been able to do it have described it as horrifying yet fascinating to see these creatures up close. Not sure I’ll ever be brave enough but if you are the sort of person, then Port Lincoln is where to be.

River Tubing on the Yarra River

That is why river tubing down the Yarra River is as laid back as a tube can get. You just drift with the current, enjoy the view and swim whenever you fancy it. I did this with some friends, and we took some snacks to eat as we watched the fish along the river side. Yes, it’s quite quiet with nothing that you have to do which is great if you just want to kick back. All you need to do is hold a tube and watch the river do all the work while you relax.

Windsurfing in Perth

What is, in fact, windsurfing – it is the intersection of surfing and sailing, and doing it in Perth is really a delight. The winds are steady, and water is tepid, making it suitable for learners as well as experts. Getting the right balance between the board surface and the wind may take some time, but once that is achieved, the thrill of sailing on the waves is incredible. I have never done it, though it seems quite enjoyable and very effective since the windsurfer riders look like they’re in for a good workout.

As you will see and hear, Australia has a water sport for the adventurer, and for laid-back tourists. As far as water activities are concerned, Australians never stay behind, whether it’s surfing or snorkeling, jet skiing to river tubing – it is all available. The next time you find yourself navigating the Land Down Under, do yourself a favor and include a few of these. I promise you’ll return with unforgettable experiences and who knows, maybe even a #1 water activity!
